WHO WE ARE

The Cape Fear Astronomical Society (CFAS) of Wilmington, North Carolina was founded in 1983. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of amateur astronomy. Our members are not professional astronomers, just enthusiastic men, women and young people with the desire to learn, share, and explore the universe around us.

WHAT WE DO

We hold meetings on the first Sunday of every month (second Sunday, if the first falls on a holiday weekend) at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wilmington. The business portion of our meetings start at 7:00 p.m. when we discuss business, observing reports, and upcoming events. Our programs start at 7:45 p.m. which include presentations in astronomy and space science given by members and guest speakers. The meetings are free, and open to the public.

Several times a month we meet for night viewing sessions and special astronomical events at various dark sky sites, away from the light pollution of Wilmington's skies.

Our members also actively educate the community about astronomy through public observing sessions, public exhibits, and outreach programs to local schools, Scouts, and other organizations. Our schedule of events and next meeting information can be found on our Schedule page.

SHOULD I JOIN?

If you are the kind of person who wakes up at four in the morning to catch a comet on the horizon, are fascinated by the detailed physics of optics and astronomical phenomena, or just like learning about the beauty of the cosmos, you'll fit right in. You don't need a telescope or binoculars to join our society, your eyes will do while you learn to map the sky. Many of our members have telescopes, and they are happy to share the views.

MEMBERSHIP

Individual membership is $20 a year; family memberships are $25. Advantages of becoming a member are:

  • Enlist to the CFAS email/newsgroup and stay updated on last minute events and plans
  • Society membership in the Astronomical League
  • Reduced subscription rates to Astronomy and Sky and Telescope magazines
  • Attend star parties (observing sessions) at local dark sky observing sites and regional gatherings
  • Cookouts for the whole family
  • Take field trips to sites of astronomical interest
  • Meet with other astronomers throughout the southeast
Come and join us, and experience the wonders of the night sky! For more information, contact us at:
