Meeting Minutes for September 11th, 2005 - by Ronnie Hawes and Debbi Hayden

President Ronnie Hawes called the September meeting of the Cape Fear Astronomical Society to order at 7:10pm. Ben Steelman gave a brief treasurer's report, and Ronnie continued on to Old Business.

The Society Cookout was discussed and planned for September 17th. (It was later changed to September 24th by an electronic meeting.) Sunday, October 9th, we will be having a "private" viewing session at the retirement community Plantation Village in Porter's Neck. If anyone would like to help Ronnie with this, please let him know!

The Community Cornucopia is set for Saturday, October 15th from 10:00am until 4:00pm. We will have a display set up inside the building, and if weather permits, we will have a telescope outside for solar viewing. Lunch will be provided.

Under New Business, Ronnie will be having a procedure done on his right ear on October 28th. He has a small cyst on his eardrum, and will be missing only a day or two of work.

We will be having a public viewing session on Friday, October 29th at the Carolina Beach State Park from sunset until "whenever". The rain date will be November 5th.

Ronnie made some personal comments about the victims of Hurricane Katrina and how humans boast about being able to dominate the earth, and this may be a wake-up call. He also discussed that this day is the four-year anniversary of September 11th. We also lost a member of our club, Patsy Racine, on August 5th, 2005. She will be dearly missed.

Tom Jacobs showed a video of the Apollo 8 mission to the Moon.

Members of the ASAW are getting membership cards

They were recently treated to the Borealis Australis (Southern Lights)!

Bob Price informed members that he would like ASAW Inc. and the CFAS to establish a joint visual viewing and recording (astrophotos and/or drawings) program for the close approach of Mars at the end of October.

Their Astronomer of the Month presentation was on Edmund Halley, 1656-1742.
